Quick answer

How do you reach Zanskar and Padum?

To reach Zanskar, most people fly to Leh and drive to Padum via Kargil and Pensi La, which usually takes two days. You can also drive from Srinagar via Kargil, or from Manali via Darcha and Shinku La. All routes are long mountain roads that open in the warmer months, so check road status first.

Key takeaways

  • Padum is the main town of Zanskar and the usual base for a trip.
  • Leh is the nearest major airport; Srinagar is the other option.
  • Routes: Leh–Kargil–Padum, Srinagar–Kargil–Padum and Manali–Shinku La–Padum.
  • Every route crosses a high pass and opens only in the warmer months.
  • Fill fuel and carry cash before entering Zanskar.
  • Keep a spare day; road work, snow and landslides change drive times.

How to reach Zanskar: what are your main options?

You can reach Zanskar only by road for most of the year. The three main road routes start from Leh, Srinagar and Manali, and the first two meet at Kargil before going on to Padum.

Padum is the main town in Zanskar. Most trips use it as a base to see Karsha, Stongdey, Phugtal and nearby villages. So when people ask how to reach Zanskar, they usually mean how to reach Padum.

Padum: The main town of the Zanskar Valley in Ladakh. It has guesthouses, shops, a small market and basic services, and is the usual base for Zanskar trips.

What is the nearest airport to Zanskar?

Leh airport is the most practical airport for a Zanskar trip. Srinagar airport is the second option. From either, you continue by road to Padum.

Leh has regular flights from Delhi and some other big cities, especially in season. Flying into Leh also lets you rest a day or two in town to get used to the altitude, which is very important before you go higher.

Srinagar also has good flight links. From Srinagar you drive over Zoji La to Drass and Kargil, then on to Padum. This route is longer by road, but it lets you see Kashmir on the way.

Fly into Leh

  • Many flights in season
  • Time to acclimatise in Leh
  • Can add Leh sightseeing to your trip
  • Straight road to Kargil on the highway

Things to keep in mind

  • Flying straight to high altitude needs full rest on day one
  • Flights can be delayed in bad weather
  • Fares can be high in peak months
  • It is still about two days of driving to Padum

Kargil has an airstrip, but do not plan your trip around flights there. Check for any current services before you count on them.

How do you reach Zanskar from Leh by road?

From Leh, you drive west on the Srinagar–Leh highway to Kargil, then turn south through the Suru Valley, cross Pensi La, and reach Padum. Most people split this into two days.

  1. 1

    Leh to Kargil

About 200 to 220 km on the highway, passing Lamayuru and high passes like Fotu La. Takes most of a day with stops.

  2. 2

    Kargil to the Suru Valley

Drive south past Sankoo and Panikhar. The valley is green in summer with views of the Nun Kun peaks.

  3. 3

    Rangdum

A wide high valley with a monastery on a small hill. Many travellers stay the night here to break the drive.

  4. 4

    Cross Pensi La

The pass that leads into Zanskar. Stop at the Drang Drung glacier viewpoint just after the pass.

  5. 5

    Reach Padum

Drive down the Stod valley to Padum. The total distance from Kargil to Padum is roughly 230 km.

The road from Leh to Kargil is mostly good. From Kargil to Padum, some parts are paved and some are rough, with gravel and small water crossings. An SUV is the safest choice. Read our Leh to Zanskar road trip page for a full plan.

How do you reach Zanskar from Srinagar?

From Srinagar, you drive via Sonamarg and Zoji La to Drass and Kargil, and then follow the same Suru Valley and Pensi La road to Padum.

This route suits people who want to add Kashmir to their trip, or who reach Jammu or Srinagar by train or flight. It is a long way, so plan at least one night in Kargil and often one more in Rangdum or the Suru Valley.

Zoji La is a high pass that can be slow because of traffic, road work and weather. Start early in the morning. Check the road status before you leave Srinagar or Sonamarg.

  • Day 1: Srinagar to Kargil via Sonamarg, Zoji La and Drass
  • Day 2: Kargil to Rangdum through the Suru Valley
  • Day 3: Rangdum to Padum via Pensi La

Trains now run into the Kashmir valley, and Jammu Tawi is a large rail head. From Jammu you can drive or fly to Srinagar first. Check current train services before you plan.

How do you reach Zanskar from Manali via Shinku La?

From Manali, you go through the Atal Tunnel towards Jispa and Darcha, then climb to Shinku La and drive down into upper Zanskar via Kargyak and Purne to Padum.

This is the most direct route on the map for travellers from Delhi, Chandigarh and Punjab. Shinku La is very high, around 5,000 metres, so do not rush. Spend a night around Jispa or Darcha before crossing if you are coming straight from the plains.

  1. 1

    Manali to Jispa or Darcha

Go through the Atal Tunnel into the Lahaul valley. Fill fuel at Tandi, near Keylong, as fuel stops are few after this.

  2. 2

    Darcha to Shinku La

Turn off the Manali–Leh road at Darcha and climb towards Shinku La. The road can be rough and snowy near the top.

  3. 3

    Shinku La to Kargyak

Drive down past the Gonbo Rangjon peak to Kargyak, one of the high villages of upper Zanskar.

  4. 4

    Kargyak to Padum

Continue via Purne, the turn-off for the Phugtal Monastery walk, and on to Padum.

The Shinku La road has improved a lot in recent years, but snow, road work and water crossings can still close it for hours or days. Check the latest road status before you start.

Can you reach Zanskar by bus or shared taxi?

Yes, but options are limited. In the road season, local buses and shared taxis run between Kargil and Padum on some days. Schedules change, so ask locally in Kargil the day before.

Public transport works for patient travellers with spare days. Seats fill fast, the ride is long, and you may wait a day or more for the next bus. For families, couples and short trips, a private cab is much easier.

When are the roads to Zanskar open?

Roads to Zanskar are usually open from early summer to early autumn. In winter, heavy snow closes the high passes, and the valley is cut off by road for months.

The opening and closing dates change every year, because they depend on snow and road clearing work. Early in the season, you may find snow walls near Pensi La and Shinku La. Late in the season, the first snow can close a pass for a few days.

In winter, the frozen Zanskar river becomes a walking route for the Chadar trek instead. For the best months to travel, read our best time to visit Zanskar guide.

You can check road and travel updates from the Kargil district administration website at kargil.nic.in, and ask your driver and stay owners on the way.

What should you know before driving to Zanskar?

Before driving to Zanskar, plan your fuel, cash, rest days and a spare day. Mobile network and ATMs are limited, and medical help is far away.

  • Fill fuel in Kargil or at Tandi; carry extra fuel for bikes
  • Carry enough cash; ATMs are few and may not work
  • Rest at least one full day in Leh, or a night in Jispa or Darcha, before high passes
  • Start each drive early in the morning; water crossings rise later in the day
  • Download offline maps and tell family your plan
  • Carry a basic first aid kit and your regular medicines
  • Keep warm clothes in the car, even in summer
  • Do not litter; carry your waste back to town
