  • Plan at least 2 driving days, with a night in Kargil.
  • Best done roughly June to September, weather allowing.
  • Fill fuel and draw cash in Kargil.

  • Check the latest road update before you start.

How do you go from Srinagar to Zanskar by road?

You drive from Srinagar to Kargil on the Srinagar to Leh highway via Sonamarg, Zoji La and Drass. From Kargil you turn south onto the road through the Suru Valley, cross Pensi La and drive down to Padum, the main town of Zanskar.

This route is a good choice if you are already in Kashmir, or if you fly into Srinagar. It also lets your body get used to the height step by step. You start lower in Srinagar, sleep at a medium height in Kargil, and only then go over the high pass into Zanskar.

Here is a simple view of the route. All distances and times are rough. Road work, weather, traffic at Zoji La and photo stops can change them a lot.

StretchRough distanceRough drive timeWhat it is like
Srinagar to Sonamargabout 80 kmabout 2 to 3 hoursGood road along the Sindh river, green meadows
Sonamarg to Drass via Zoji Laabout 60 kmabout 2 to 4 hoursHigh pass, can be dusty or muddy, traffic stops are common
Drass to Kargilabout 60 kmabout 1.5 to 2 hoursGood highway along the river, war memorial on the way
Kargil to Rangdum via Suru Valleyabout 130 kmabout 4 to 6 hoursVillages, Nun Kun views, road gets rougher after Panikhar
Rangdum to Padum via Pensi Laabout 100 kmabout 4 to 6 hoursHigh pass, Drang Drung glacier view, rough patches
Roads in this region keep changing. Some stretches are being improved and others get damaged by snow or landslides. Check the latest official road update before you go.

If you are also comparing other ways in, read our full guide on how to reach Zanskar. It covers the Leh and Manali routes too.

How many days do you need for a Srinagar to Zanskar road trip?

Plan at least two full driving days from Srinagar to Padum, with a night in Kargil. A more relaxed plan takes three days, with a night in Rangdum. Then add at least two or three days inside Zanskar.

Driving Kargil to Padum in one day is possible, but it is a long and tiring day on a rough road. Breaking the drive at Rangdum gives you time to enjoy the Suru Valley, see Rangdum Monastery and rest before Pensi La.

One-way or round trip?

Many people come in from Srinagar and leave by another route, for example to Leh or towards Manali via Shinku La, if the roads are open. This way you see more and do not repeat the same road. Ask us to plan a one-way trip with the right cab or drop.

What is the Zoji La drive like, and when is it open?

Zoji La is a high mountain pass between Sonamarg and Drass, roughly around 3,500 metres. It is usually open from late spring or early summer until late autumn, and closes in winter due to heavy snow.

The road over Zoji La is narrow in places, with steep drops and loose surface. In early summer there can be high snow walls on both sides. In dry weather it is dusty, and after rain it can be muddy. Army convoys and trucks use this road, so traffic stops are normal.

  • Start from Srinagar or Sonamarg early in the morning
  • Keep water, snacks and a warm layer in the car
  • Expect waiting time at Zoji La and do not rush
  • Follow traffic police and army instructions
  • Do not stop on narrow bends for photos
  • Check if one-way timings are in force on the day
Opening and closing dates of Zoji La change every year with snow. Timings and traffic rules can also change. Check the latest official update before the trip.

After Zoji La you reach Drass, one of the coldest inhabited places in India, and then a smooth road takes you to Kargil town.

What can you see in Kargil and the Suru Valley on the way?

On the way you can see the Kargil War Memorial near Drass, Kargil town, the green villages of the Suru Valley, views of the Nun Kun peaks, Parkachik glacier and Rangdum Monastery.

Most people rush through this part, but it is one of the best parts of the trip. The Suru Valley is greener than Zanskar, with fields, willow trees and small villages. As you go higher it turns wide, open and stark near Rangdum.

Kargil War Memorial

A memorial near Drass for soldiers who died in the 1999 war. A calm and moving stop on Day 1.

Kargil town

The main town on the route. Good for a night stop, fuel, cash, food and basic shopping.

Sankoo and Panikhar

Green villages in the Suru Valley with fields and streams. Nice for a short walk and tea.

Nun Kun views

On clear days you can see the high, snowy Nun Kun peaks from the road beyond Panikhar.

Parkachik glacier

A glacier that comes down close to the road and the river. A popular photo stop.

Rangdum Monastery

A monastery on a small hill in a wide valley, with big mountains all around.

What is the Pensi La and Drang Drung glacier stretch like?

Pensi La is the high pass that separates the Suru Valley from Zanskar, roughly around 4,400 metres. From the road just beyond it you can see Drang Drung glacier, one of the most famous sights of the trip.

The climb to Pensi La is gradual from the Rangdum side. At the top there are small lakes and wide views. On the Zanskar side, the road goes down past the long, curving Drang Drung glacier and then follows the valley to Padum. Some stretches are rough, rocky or have water crossings, especially in the afternoon when snow melts.

What makes it special

  • Huge, open high-altitude views
  • Drang Drung glacier close to the road
  • Small lakes near the top of the pass
  • Very few vehicles and a lot of peace

What to be ready for

  • Cold wind even on sunny days
  • Rough road and water crossings in places
  • No shops, fuel or network for long stretches
  • Altitude can cause headache if you rush
Do not walk onto the glacier or go near its edge without a guide. Glaciers have hidden cracks and loose ice. Enjoy it from the viewpoint.

To understand which months are best for crossing Pensi La, read our guide on the best time to visit Zanskar.

Where can you stay between Srinagar and Padum?

The usual night stops are Sonamarg or Kargil on the first night, Rangdum on the second, and Padum once you reach Zanskar. Stays get simpler as you go further from Srinagar.

Kargil has hotels and guest houses of different types. Rangdum has a few basic guest houses, homestays and seasonal camps. Padum has guest houses, small hotels and homestays. In Rangdum, expect simple rooms, shared or basic washrooms and limited power. That is part of the experience.

Which vehicle is best for the Srinagar to Zanskar route?

A high ground clearance SUV with an experienced mountain driver is the most comfortable and safe choice. Experienced bikers also love this route. Small low cars can struggle on the rough stretches after Panikhar.

What about fuel, cash, mobile network and permits on this route?

Fill your tank fully and draw enough cash in Kargil. After Kargil, fuel, ATMs and network are very limited until Padum. For permits, rules can change, so check the latest official update before you go.

  • Fill fuel fully in Kargil. Self-drivers and bikers should also carry extra fuel in a safe can
  • Draw enough cash in Srinagar or Kargil for the whole Zanskar part of the trip
  • Expect weak or no mobile network after the Suru Valley villages
  • Postpaid SIMs of some networks work better in this region than prepaid SIMs from other states. Check before you travel
  • Download offline maps of the full route
  • Carry original government photo ID for every traveller and keep copies
  • Check the latest permit rules for Indian and foreign travellers with the local administration
  • Tell family your plan, as calls may not connect for a day or more

Is the Kargil to Padum road in good condition?

Parts of the Kargil to Padum road are good, and some stretches are rough, rocky or have water crossings, especially near and after Pensi La. Work to improve the road keeps going, so the condition changes from year to year. Check the latest update before you go and use a vehicle with good ground clearance.

When is the best time for a Srinagar to Zanskar road trip?

The road trip is usually done from about June to September, when Zoji La and Pensi La are normally open. Early June can still have snow and late September can bring early snowfall. Opening dates change every year, so check the latest official road update before you plan.

Can I do the Srinagar to Zanskar route in a small car?

A small car with low ground clearance is not ideal. The road after Panikhar and over Pensi La has rough patches, rocks and water crossings that can damage the underside. An SUV with good clearance and a driver who knows mountain roads is the safer and more comfortable choice.

Is there mobile network between Kargil and Padum?

Mobile network is available in Kargil and in some Suru Valley villages, but it is weak or missing for long stretches, including around Rangdum and Pensi La. Padum has some network, but it can be patchy. Download offline maps and tell your family your plan before you leave Kargil.

Where do people stop for the night between Kargil and Padum?

Most people stop at Rangdum, roughly halfway between Kargil and Padum. It has a few basic guest houses, homestays and seasonal camps. Stays are simple, nights are cold and network is limited. Breaking the journey here makes the Pensi La crossing much easier.

Do I need a permit for a Srinagar to Zanskar road trip?

Permit rules in Ladakh and Zanskar can change, and they can be different for Indian and foreign travellers. Please check the latest official rules with the local administration before your trip. Always carry original government photo ID for every traveller, with copies, as there can be checks on the way.

Is the Srinagar route better than the Leh route to Zanskar?

Both reach Padum through Kargil. The Srinagar route is good if you start in Kashmir or fly into Srinagar, and it gains height slowly. The Leh route suits people already in Ladakh. Many travellers enter from one side and leave by another to see more. Choose based on where your trip starts.
